Dearest reader,

Herein lies the faithful record of our family campaigns: the camps pitched, the trails marched, the hounds praised, and the provisions consumed. Each expedition is preserved in the form of a field dispatch, written as though from some bygone war against nothing more serious than mosquitoes and muddy socks.

Should these pages find you well, read them by firelight. Should they find you poorly, read them anyway. A little fresh air, even in memory, seldom does harm.
